On July 9, 180 million Indonesians will head to the polls—half of them have never voted before. To help these first-time voters make an informed choice, the
Google Developer Group (GDG) Indonesia teamed up with several NGOs to encourage developers to create apps that provide easy access to information about the elections, the candidates and their political platforms.
The
Code 4 Vote 2.0 Challenge hackathon attracted over 334 developers, who were all given access to the same election data and one week to come up with a winning app. Last week, we received 106 submissions from just over a hundred teams. These were judged on several criteria, including user interface, technical complexity, use of
API, and the app’s benefit to voters.
Here are the top three winning apps, jointly selected by the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), GDG Jakarta, the Asia Foundation, the General Elections Commission (KPU) and Google:
- Team Ice Barbel, composed of students from the Institut Teknologi in Bandung, developed Pemiluman, which provides comprehensive background information about the presidential candidates with an especially interactive, intuitive and user-friendly interface. It allows the user to compare the candidates and to set reminders about upcoming events related to the elections.
- Team WOW’s members from Universitas Indonesia created the web-based app Pemimpin Kita, which is tailored to young or first-time voters, providing them with a simple explanation about the election, including a tutorial on how to vote, and an elections FAQ. It also enables users to comment on the candidates’ programs.
- Femmous, an all-female team with students from Universitas Gunadarma, built Ayo Nyoblos, an easy-to-navigate app which offers a video tutorial, quiz and game to help voters better understand the polling process.
Congratulations to all the winners, and we hope these apps help empower Indonesians to vote wisely.
